UD VPN: Acquiring a 2FA code without an Authenticator App

Authenticator apps are the recommended way of acquiring your 2FA code for use with VPN. If you do not use an Authenticator app or you do not have your Authenticator device handy, you have two options for obtaining a 2FA code for VPN:

Using VPN to request the code by text or voice

By entering sms1, sms2, etc., or voice1, voice2, etc. in the Second Password text box when logging in to VPN, you can request that the 2FA code be sent to your phone.

  1. Review the phone numbers you have on file for use with 2FA.

    1. Log in to My UD Settings.
    2. In the My account settings section, click Change my two-factor authentication settings.
    3. In the 2FA methods section, you'll see a display like the one shown below:
Text and Voice notification phone numbers with option to edit.
When notifying the UD 2FA system which phone should receive your 2FA code, you'll use sms1 to refer to the first Text message (cell) phone number listed, sms2 to refer to the second cell number listed, and so on. You'll use voice1 to refer to the first Voice message (voice) phone listed, voice2 to refer to the second voice number listed and so on. In this example,
      • sms1 would refer to the phone in line 1
      • voice1 would refer to the phone in line 2
      • voice2 would refer to the phone in line 3
  2. Open the AnyConnect VPN client.

  3. Select the UDEL-VPN group.

  1. Provide your UDelNet ID and UDelNet password as usual. (Do not include "@udel.edu" after your UDelNet ID.)

In the Second Password: text box, type sms1, voice1, sms2, voice2, etc.--the code that will indicate which phone you want to receive your 2FA code.

  2. Click OK.

  3. Since you didn't have a 2FA code, your login to VPN will fail. However, if you provided your correct UDelNet ID and password, the 2FA code will be sent to the phone you indicated.

  4. Complete the AnyConnect login screen again using the 2FA code as the Second Password.

  5. Click OK.

Using a private or incognito browser window

You could also open a "private" or "incognito" window in your browser and instruct the system to send your 2FA code to one of your alternate devices.

  1. To open a private window:

    • In Internet Explorer, press CTRL-SHIFT-P.
    • In Firefox, press CTRL-SHIFT-P.
    • In Chrome, press CTRL-SHIFT-N.
    • In Safari 8 or higher press SHIFT-COMMAND-N. In older versions of Safari, select Private Browsing from the Safari pull-down menu.
  2. Go to the main CAS login page by copying and pasting the following URL into the address bar of your Web browser's private window:
    https://cas.nss.udel.edu/cas/login

  3. Provide your UDelNet ID and password when prompted.

  4. When prompted to provide your 2FA code, click Don't have your default device?

  5. Select the alternative delivery method you would like to use to receive your authentication code.

  6. Click Send code. You will receive your authentication code as either a voice message or text message, depending on what you selected.

  7. Once you have confirmed that you have received your 2FA code, close the private browser window.

  8. In the Cisco AnyConnect window, enter the authentication code in the Second Password field, and click or tap Connect.

2FA
2FA uses two factors to verify you are who you say you are. 2FA makes your personal information less vulnerable and helps prevent anyone but you from accessing your accounts, even if they know your UDel ID Password.
