Unix: More information about vi

There are hundreds of Web pages describing the use of vi. Here are some pages that IT staff have found useful.

  • Mastering the vi editor
Originally published at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Engineering
This tutorial is a good next step. It contains a fairly complete list of features and instructions on how to use them.

  • An Introduction to Display Editing with vi
    Bill Joy (with Mark Horton)
This document is the classic written by Bill Joy, the author of vi, and his colleague Mark Horton. Even though it is quite complete, it is still accessible to beginners. Includes a good conceptual overview, too.

  • Graphical vi-vim Cheat Sheet and Tutorial
viEmu's site recommended by IT staff to UD researchers.

  • Linux vi and vim editor: Tutorial and advanced features
YoLinux.com describes their site as follows: "This vi tutorial is intended for those who wish to master and advance their skills beyond the basic features of the basic editor. It covers buffers, "vi" command line instructions, interfacing with UNIX commands, and ctags. The vim editor is an enhanced version of vi."

  • vi reference
    Maarten Letmaath and James Hu
This web site is a reference site, not a tutorial one. It lists command and insert mode key commands, command-line (ex) commands, and options.

  • vi Lovers Home Page
    Thomer M. Gil
This Web site contains a collection of links to more information about vi, its lore, and its variants.

  • Vim Documentation
SourceForge project maintained by Dan Sharp
This Web site consists of a comprehensive collection of documentation on Vim, the version of vi ported to Microsoft Windows. Vim works well on a Windows system. Since Vim is an enhanced version of vi, much of the documentation is still useful to vi users.
