Getting LaTeX software
- Windows: proTeXt - MiKTeX-based distribution for Windows
- Mac: MacTeX-2011 Distribution
- UNIX: TeX Live
- Other software: Importing UDThesis class and other packages
- Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word - Version: 3.x, 4.x, 5.x
Import the udthesis.cls file into the styles folder for Scientific Workplace or Scientific Word, run it a couple of times, and it should work. Each time you load your .tex file, it will prompt with a warning indicating udthesis.cls could not have been loaded correctly. Just ignore the warning, and it will pickup the style.
- Lyx Home Page
Important Note: UDThesis is based on the LaTeX report class not article class, so where it refers to article for the layout file, use report instead. Also, the class and layout name should be udthesis and udthesis.layout respectively (i.e. where you see eethesis and clv2, it should be udthesis).
- Collaborative LaTeX environments:
- Overleaf
An online LaTeX and Rich Text collaborative writing and publishing tool that makes the whole process of writing, editing and publishing scientific documents much quicker and easier. Overleaf is based on TeX Live TL2018 and is expected to be upgraded to TL2019 in the near future. See Overleaf blog entry for a list of problems and inconsistencies in popular TeX packages - a useful resource of authors and users.
- University of Delaware does not have a campus wide license for Overleaf, however the University of Delaware College of Arts and Science (CAS) has an Overleaf group license. CAS is willing to cost share to allow other departments/colleges to request to be added to their Overleaf group license at a lower cost pro-rated based on CAS annual renewal. Please contact Pat McMahon (pmcmahon@udel.edu) to request information about the CAS Overleaf group license and the cost to join.
- ShareLaTeX
LaTeX, Evolved: The easy to use, online, collaborative LaTeX editor. The ShareLaTeX editor will be at the core of the new platform, on top of the Overleaf ecosystem.
Including certain packages may not always work as expected with UDThesis, and can cause your document to no longer follow the UDThesis guidelines. Below is a list of packages and how to use them properly with UDThesis or in some cases avoid all together.

- BibTeX
- BibTeX
- JabRef
An open source bibliography reference manager. The native file format used by JabRef is BibTeX, the standard LaTeX bibliography format. JabRef runs on the Java VM (version 1.5 or newer), and should work equally well on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
- Natbib
Make sure to follow the instrutions in the LaTeX UDThesis Style Guidelines on page 29 to get the proper entry and heading for your references in the Table of Contents. Using other methods such as the tocbibind package alters the List of Tables and List of Figures as well as changes the page dimension, etc. and therefore produces incorrect results.
- LaTeX Bibliography Styles Database
Provides style files (bst and sty) for use with LaTeX documents using BibTeX or AMSrefs to manage the bibliography. The styles are referenced by the academic journals to which they apply.
