UD Device Compatibility

When bringing devices to UD, please consider that

  • Enterprise networks such as UD’s work differently than a home network.
  • Because so many devices are available, not all devices can be tested for use at UD.
  • Devices are subject to updates from vendors. A device that successfully works one day could have connection issues after an update. A device behind on updates can also experience connection and security issues.

These devices have successfully connected to the UD Devices network:

Streaming Devices

  • Amazon Fire Stick/Cube - Amazon Firestick lite (2020)
  • Roku (various devices) - Roku Express 4k+
  • Apple TV

Gaming Devices

  • Xbox
  • PlayStation
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Oculus

Smart Speakers/Displays

  • Amazon Echo - Echo dot 4th generation
  • Apple HomePod mini
Google Chromecast, Google Home, and Google Nest will not work on the UD network

Guidelines for choosing a printer or TV

Printer

If you choose a printer that has a built-in screen, you can configure access directly from the printer. Printers can be configured from a computer with a USB cable but are easier to configure from a built-in screen. You may be able to configure your printer from a smartphone or tablet, but we recommend using a computer.

Bring a USB printer cable to campus. If you cannot print to the printer wirelessly, you can then print by connecting the USB cable from your computer to the printer.

Choose a printer from a well-known vendor, such as

  • Brother
  • HP
  • Epson
  • Canon
  • Xerox
  • Lexmark

Smart TV

Any major brand, such as those listed below, of TV with built-in streaming channels should work. UD does not offer cable TV service.

  • Sony
  • Samsung
  • TCL
  • Insignia
  • LG
  • Vizio
  • Element
  • Philips
  • JVC
  • RCA
  • Sceptre

Casting or streaming content from a device or computer to your TV will not work. If your TV does not have built-in streaming channels, you can use a Roku or Firestick to stream directly to the

Some Smart TVs run an embedded version of AndroidOS with MAC randomization that cannot be disabled. These devices cannot join the eduroam network. They must connect to wired Ethernet jacks, or connect to eduroam using an external device that supports Wi-Fi, such as a Roku.
