Updating macOS

Use Software Update to find and install updates for the macOS, built-in applications like Safari, and downloaded App Store applications. Installing updates regularly will keep your Apple computer safe and secure.

How to use Software Update

  1. Some updates require a system restart. Be sure to save any open documents before performing an update.
  2. From the Apple menu  at the top left corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.

  1. In the System Preferences window, choose Software Updates.

  1. If any updates are available, click the Restart Now or Update Now button to install them. You can click More info to see details about each update and to select specific updates to install. You may be asked to enter your administrator password.

  1. If required, the computer will restart. Some system updates take some time to complete and display a progress bar during the installation. It is normal for the computer to stay in this state for an extended period of time, or even reboot several times as the update progresses.
