How can I check my PDF file to make sure I did it correctly?

Follow these guidelines when creating PDF files to be submitted to ProQuest/UMI. Be sure to check your results.

To check your file:

  1. Open the file in Adobe Acrobat Pro.

  2. From the File menu, select Properties then click Fonts.

  3. Verify that all fonts listed for the document are either Type 1 or TrueType.

  4. You should see Embedded Subset for all fonts with the possible exception of Times, Arial/Helvetica, and Courier.

  5. Select OK to close the Document Properties window.

  6. From the Edit menu, select Preferences and click Page Display.

  7. If Use local fonts is checked, click the check box to turn it off (the check mark should disappear).

  8. Select OK to close the Preferences window.

  9. Inspect each page of your PDF to see how it will appear on another computer without the same fonts as yours.

  10. Print a copy of your file and verify that everything prints as expected.

  11. You may want to turn the Use local fonts option back on (see step 7).

Online PDF services

You can use Smallpdf, an online PDF service with a Dropbox like interface, that makes it super easy to convert and edit all your PDF files. It is one place to solve all your PDF problems and it is 100 percent free. This is not a UD-guaranteed service; however, we have had good success converting Word documents to PDFs, compressing PDFs, merging PDFs and splitting PDFs. Please review all services available, and the privacy and terms before using this service.
